The focus of my PhD project is on the discovery of drug leads (plant extracts) working as selective sodium-dependent glucose co-transporters (SGLT-2) inhibitors for management of T2D. This will be achieved by identification of plant materials (medicinal plants or industrial waste) with significant effect on targets involved in T2D for development of multi-target herbal drugs. The active compounds in the plant materials will be identified in our pharmacometabolomics technology platform that couples high-resolution pharmacological bioactivity-screening with hyphenated HPLC-SPE-NMR for structure elucidation. The purpose of this project is to provide the scientific background for the introduction of herbal-based drugs for OTC treatment of T2D.
